HIP Replacement

In Hip Replacement Operation hip joint surfaces are partially or totally replaced with an artificial joint.

Type and material of the implant changes according to the patient’s age. In younger patients ceramic implant surfaces are preferred where in elder patients polietilene, a special type of plastic, implant surfaces are preferred.

Patients with hip fracture can also need to have a hip replacement surgery. In this situation, we can either prefer to make a partial or total hip replacement surgery.

The operation takes about 2 hours. Mean time to stay at hospital is about 3 days. This period is especially important for wound care and early physiotherapy. Patients can bare weight in hours after the operation.

Patients need to use raised sit toilets at least 1 month after the operation and avoid excess forces to the operated hip. After their control in post operative 20th day, patients are free to return to their daily routines.

A hip replacement, made with a good quality implant and an ideal technique can help patients use their joints pain free last as long as 20 years or even more. I prefer worldly well known implant brands, which have at least 10 year follow-ups. 

The important point is to help the patients keep moving and doing their activities in a comfortable way.
